Show figures rise in teen pregnancies rise in teen pregnancies
FIGURES released this week show the number of teenage pregnancies in Wychavon has risen by four per cent over a ten-year period, the highest rise across Worcestershire.
Between 2006 and 2008 - the latest figures available - 180 girls aged 15 to 17-years-old became pregnant, a rate of 28.4 per 1,000 girls in the district.
This is an increase on the statistics for 1998 to 2000, where there were 151 pregnant teenagers, amounting to 27.3 per 1,000.
Only Bromsgrove district also showed an increase, although this was much lower at only 0.6 per cent and teen pregnancy rates decreased across the county overall.
Despite fluctuations in the in-between period, the first figures show 55 per cent of teens chose to have an abortion, with the figures levelling back at 55 per cent for the 2006 to 2008 period.
Even though they have risen, the numbers are still lower than most areas in Worcestershire, which had a rate of 33.4 pregnancies per 1,000 in the 2006 to 2008 - five more than Wychavon’s figure of 28.4.
Simon Rushall of the Worcestershire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership said: “The number of conceptions in Wychavon is exceptionally low, even for Worcestershire.
