Tsunami warning lifted; Waves reach Japan, Russia
The tsunami from Chile's deadly earthquake hit Japan's main islands and the shores of Russia on Sunday, but the smaller-than-expected waves prompted the lifting of a Pacific-wide alert. Hawaii and other Pacific islands were also spared.
In Japan, where hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from shorelines, the biggest wave following the magnitude-8.8 quake off Chile hit the northern island of Hokkaido. There were no immediate reports of damage from the four-foot (1.2-meter) wave, though some piers were briefly flooded.
Israel police storm holy site to quell protest
Israeli police forces stormed the most contentious holy site in Jerusalem on Sunday to disperse masked Palestinian protesters hurling rocks at visiting foreign tourists.
The incident was over quickly, but the area remained tense. In the past, violence at the site — known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary — has erupted into deadly battles.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police dispersed some 20 masked protesters who had holed up overnight in Al-Aqsa mosque building inside the hilltop compound. The protesters pelted tourists with objects early Sunday, and threw rocks at the police when they responded to the incident, he said.
Calm was quickly restored, he said, and about a thousand tourists have since visited the site.

Emerging out of the rubble of the officially atheist Soviet Union, Tajikistan's Islamic Revival Party has sought to fill the spot once occupied by Communism's ideological certainties.
Algeria police chief shot dead at force headquarters

He was killed by a colleague during a regular morning meeting in the police headquarters in front of several witnesses, the interior ministry said.
The alleged killer was seized with what the ministry called an attack of madness and shot Col Tounsi before turning the gun on himself.
He was now in hospital with severe injuries, the ministry said.
A judicial inquiry into the circumstances of the shooting has been opened. There has been no indication of a link to Islamist militants, who have periodically attacked government targets.
